The more I learn about health, the more I am convinced that reducing stress is probably the Number 1 most powerful thing we can do to improve our health. More important than diet, exercise and sleep.
So with that said, I want to give you some really simple ways to reduce stress.
You can do these immediately, they don’t cost anything and they take very little time.
But they pay big dividends in terms of reducing stress and improving health. So give them a try!
6 Simple Ways To Reduce Stress And Live A Happier, Healthier Life
Take at least one minute out of each day to just stop. Stop thinking. Stop planning. Stop worrying. Just stop, relax and be…for at least 1 minute. Set a timer (I use my iPhone timer) and just sit until the timer goes off. Gradually increase the amount of time as you see fit. All you have to do is take time out of your day (even if it’s as little as 1 minute) to do nothing. That’s it.
#2. Be Thankful
Take 1 minute to be thankful for at least one thing in your life each day. Be thankful for the fact that you have clean water to drink, a place to live, food to eat, clothes, your dog, a computer, the Internet…anything. If you can’t think of anything, just sit and say “Thank You” over and over again. Just like Meditation, all you have to do is set a timer for at least 1 minute and then practice being thankful until the timer goes off.
#3. Let Go
Sometimes we hang on to anger or resentment about something that happened in the past. This is a waste of time and energy. We can’t change the past but we can learn from it and use the experiences of the past to help us create a better future. Learn from the past then let it go and move on.
#4. Go Outside
Nature has an incredible way of calming our minds. Get outside each day and try to notice something in nature. You know, stop and smell the roses or listen to a bird chirping, look at a flower, the stars, the sunrise, the moon, the green grass, smell the fresh air etc. Just focus in on something and get out of your head for a little bit. I know this sounds kind of cheesy but it’s an incredibly powerful and simple way to ease your mind.
Go to a comedy show, rent a funny movie on Netflix, go out to a funny movie, read a funny book, watch a funny comedian on YouTube. Whatever it takes to make you laugh some more, just do it. Laughing is healthy and it will even help your abs get stronger!
#6. Be Present
Stress is almost always fear or worry about something in the future that hasn’t happened yet and probably never will happen. Each day, take some time to just “be present” in whatever it is that you are doing. If you are reading your son or daughter a book, try not to think of work or the mile long to do list. Read the book and try to get into it a little. Use different voices, point out things in the book or ask your son or daughter questions as you go along. This will help you stop thinking about “stuff” and just be there with them, which is way more important than the “stuff” anyway.
